I put the 77 on my Tama Bell Brass 14x6.5 reissue snare, and it gets a pretty dry, high, fat note. Remo have had countless rumors and accounts of making the coating differently the last years, which have made them lose a tad of their former reputation. But i have used this head every day for some weeks now, and the coating shows no sign of wear, only stick-marks.
As i said in the beginning, the snare gets a dry, high note, and i think this sound compliments deeper snares that doesn't sound so defined. It brings out the ghost notes and sensitivity, but it also kind of "gates" the attack, so when i play really hard, the crack from the rimshots aren't as cutting.
I can see this head being used on shallow snares too, but the thickness and dampening would most likely make them sound a little too "boxy".
All in all this head delivers excellent performance for the little higher price than a regular snare head. But if you're using a shallow wood snare, this head will kill all the ring, and i mean ALL. So buy it after purpose and with a clear sound in mind, it can superbly control or kill the snare sound depending on the model.
