Intuitive Instruments Exquis

First, one should know when buying this product that it is basically useless without a computer running the accompanying software suite. And installing that is not as straightforward as the manufacturer claims. Actually, after messing with the software installation for half a day I gave it all up, since I could not make the accompanying sound banks work at all.

It is far fram intuitive and I think the worst part is the "happy case" documentation that does not help at all when it just does not work out of the box.

I'm not having any weird setup, it's a brand new MBP M3 with latest Sonoma. The installers caused all kind of alarm bells raised about the lack of software certificates etc.

It looked nice, but I ended up being just frustrated with the lack of intuitiveness that were claimed. Too bad, because the look and feel of it wasn't too shabby, actually it's a really nice piece of hardware. But without proper functioning software, it's just bloating my desk.

So, it's going back to the store.

I purchased the Esquis as a present, which stayed with me for a few days, so I had the time to fiddle around with it. First of all - it is a different beast from all the other keyboards I have been using. The backlight is extremely helpful and it in general, it would push you to explore your limits, which is very, very nice. Easy to connect to external sound sources (I use Ableton with Kontakt mostly).
The only downside I would like to mention is that the keys require force, greater than the other synths. I have big hands, and that is perfectly fine for me, but more delicate players might find it tricky to get the best from their stroke and aftertouch.
Definitely would recommend!

Ich habe dieses Gerät auf der NAMM (Youtube) gesehen und ich war gleich vom Konzept fasziniert. Es ist mein erster MPE-Controller und auch aus diesem Grund heraus, habe ich entschieden, dem Gerät eine Chance zu geben. Auch die Art und Weise, wie die Noten angeordnet sind (eher mathematisch korrekt), finde ich genial.

Ich bin kein Profi, arbeite aber mit Studio One etwa seit 10 Jahren, wobei ich die 3 Arbeitstage, die ich für Musik in der Woche zur Verfügung habe, ziemlich ausnütze.

Was kann der Exquis von Intuitive Instruments?

1) DAW Anschluss, hier Studio One 6:
Der Controller funktionierte in S1 6 mit dem Mai Tai Synth instant. Man braucht diesen nur im Setup für Externe Geräte auf den richtigen Receive Port "Exquis" einstellen und MPE anklicken. Fertig!

2) MPE Standard Parameter:
Alle 16 MIDI Kanäle für die MPE Kommunikation werden in S1 automatisch freigeschaltet. Die Zuordnung für Slide CC74 ist intern fix, der Pitch Range von 48st ist vorgewählt aber einstellbar. Dies sollte auch für andere DAW's gelten.

Besonderheit in S1:
Für VST3 3rd party Plugins (seit S1v5.3 verfügbar) gibt es in S1 nur einen Fallstrick: Man muss im Instrumentenfenster zusätzlich "Enable MPE" ankreuzen, wenn man mit VST3 Plugins anderer Hersteller arbeitet.

Test mit Arturia V Collection / Pigments und U-HE Hive2:
Ich hatte keine Probleme mit diesen Plugins. Bei U-HE muss man die MPE-Betaversionen installieren. Gibt es auch für Diva und Bazille.

Spielgefühl und Buttons:
Der Controller macht extrem viel Spaß, die Hexa-Buttons (MPE X/Y) lassen sich gut steuern. Andere MPE Geräte mit "Klaviertasten" haben sicherlich in der Y-Auslenkung mehr Spielraum. Aber mit dem Hub komme ich sehr gut zurecht. Die druckempfindlichen Buttons (Aftertouch/Pressure) empfinde ich als hervorragend. Und man kann diese ja auch mit Nicht-MPE Settings spielen.

Hardware insgesamt:
Sehr gut verarbeitet, wirklich ein hochwertiges Gerät.

Einstellungen:
Wie gesagt, der Exquis funktioniert im DAW Modus sofort. Für die Scales und dem Grundton, drückt man den den Setup Knopf und kann mit den 4 Push Encodern alles einstellen. Für die Oktaven gibt es ebenfalls Buttons. Nur mit dem Strip-Slider kann ich noch nichts anfangen.

Software von II/Exquis:
Es gibt noch den SurgeXT Synth (VST2/VST3/AUv3) als Download, der für den Exquis maßgeschneidert ist. Mach viel Spaß!

Neben der DAW Anbindung kann man den Exquis exklusiv mit einer eigenen SW spielen, die auch Plugins einbinden kann und eigene Patterns ablegen kann.

Fazit:
Tolles Gerät, bin sehr zufrieden, der Preis ist gerechtfertigt! Ich liebe diesen Controller! Ob der Exquis für Live oder Studio Pro Leute was ist, wird sich zeigen. Ich bin da optimistisch.

PS: Bei Intuitive Instruments muss man noch lernen, dass Welt da draußen nicht nur französisch spricht.
