I usually use two-ply tom heads for longevity, but the idea of a head with the tone of a G1 or Ambassador with the toughness of a G2/Emperor really appealed to me.
This head is not quite that. The good new is that the heads seems virtually indestructible. After months of use, there barely a mark on them. They can, and have taken punishment that would visibly dent most 2-ply heads.
But IMO they do not really sound like single-ply heads. They do not really have the openness and crispness of G1's or Ambassadors. Neither do they have the focus or fat attack of G2's or Emperors.
In their defense, the UV1's do tune up very easily and do not sound offensive in any way. But it strikes me as a jack of all trades and a master of none since sonically, it does not really bring anything to the table that I couldn't get before with "regular" heads.
I would still like to try the UV1 on snare though, as the coating seems like it would be great with brushes!
