I'm an amateur cellist. I play home. I usually play music from the Baroque and Classical eras and so far I've always been happy with nylon core strings (Thomastik). This is the first time I've tried the real thing.
It is clearly noticeable that the gut string is less stable with tuning and more difficult to play in terms of intonation and tone (easy to get sore). These is what we are told is to be expected from gut strings, though. Tuning and intonation are much easier than I thought it would be and dominating the tone rather more difficult. When it sounds sweet and in tune the results are very satisfactory. It is very responsive to bowing nuances. I'm not terribly certain I will stick to gut strings but if I would I think this is were I would start.
